Cost Breakdown Chart

Overview

The Relocation Cost Calculator helps you compare the total cost of relocating between your current location and one or more candidate homes, apartments, or offices. It covers both one-time moving costs (security deposit, admin fees, moving service, transport) and recurring monthly costs (rent, utilities, internet, parking), then projects the total over a configurable period of 1, 3, 6, or 12 months. Set your current location as the baseline to instantly see how much each alternative costs or saves.

Example Scenario

Comparing a current apartment to a new rental

You currently pay $1,500/month rent plus utilities and internet. A new apartment costs a $5,000 security deposit, $1,500 admin fee, $2,500 moving service, and $2,200/month rent. Over 6 months the total for your current place is about $10,260, while the new apartment comes to roughly $19,270 once one-time moving costs are included. The Comparison tab shows the exact difference and whether moving is worth it for your time horizon.

Technical Notes

One-time costs such as deposits, admin fees, and moving services are applied once regardless of the selected period.

Monthly costs such as rent and utilities are multiplied by the selected duration to estimate long-term expenses.

The location marked as Current serves as the baseline for calculating savings or additional expenses for all other locations.

Lengthening the period increases recurring monthly costs much faster than one-time costs, which can change which option is cheapest.

The total equals all one-time costs plus all monthly costs multiplied by the duration.

Refundable deposits are counted as a one-time outlay here. If you expect a full refund at the end, you may want to enter a reduced value.

Common Mistakes

Frequently Asked Questions

Monthly costs such as rent, utilities, and internet are multiplied by your selected duration. For example, $1,000/month over 6 months becomes $6,000.

One-time moving costs are fixed, while monthly costs accumulate over time. A longer period makes ongoing monthly costs dominate, which can flip the ranking.

You can include it as a one-time outlay. If you expect the full deposit back at the end, consider entering a reduced value for a fairer comparison.

Yes. Add as many candidate locations as you need and compare them all against your current location at once.
